Westbound LIE Scheduled To Close Tonight For Construction

DOT plans to work on repairing Waverly Avenue bridge, damaged by truck.

The westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway between Exits 63 and 62 will be closed tonight, beginning at 9 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. tomorrow.

According to a release from the New York State DOT, the closure is due to needed repairs to the Waverly Avenue Bridge over the LIE, which was damaged by a truck.

The transportation department stated that the nighttime closures will take place every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday night for the next four to five weeks, and can be cancelled or extended depending on weather conditions.

Motorists will be warned via the overhead electronic INFORM signs, but the department is asking drivers to use alternate routes to travel west or possibly suffer heavy delays when rerouted to the service road. They are also urging drivers to use caution if they must travel through the construction site by driving slowly and following the detour signs.

The department is offering real-time travel information by calling 511 or visiting www.511NY.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Travel information is also accessible from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com  and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi
