Week 1: Demolition Brings Down Bavarian Inn's Outer Walls

Progress on the county's demolition of the former restaurant and catering hall.

A week into the long-awaited demolition of the Bavarian Inn, piles of concrete rubble show signs of progress.

Demolition crews have closed off the site with a six-foot chainlink fence to keep out trespassers while using bulldozers and pay loaders to tear down the outer walls of the former Lake Ronkonkoma restaurant. Gone are the heavily graffitied white walls, leaving half-torn off roofs above splintered wood and exposed concrete foundations.

Suffolk County and state elected officials gathered on Sept. 23 to mark the officials start of demolition of the Bavarian Inn, reassuring gathered residents that the land will be transformed into a public park in the future.
