Watch: Bulldozers Tear Down Bavarian Inn ... Sort Of

With asbestos remediation still slated for the former catering hall, only some of the outside structures and retaining walls came down Monday.

If you were hoping to see a dramatic eyesore come crashing down, torn apart by bulldozers and sledgehammers, turned into a leveled pile of graffiti-laced brick, glass and boards, well, so were we.

With much fanfare, Suffolk, Brookhaven, Smithtown and Islip officials kicked off the demolition of the Bavarian Inn in Ronkonkoma on Monday, touting the move as the first step in taking a blighted parcel and turning it into a park.

Monday's demolition, however, was just a first step too. With asbestos remediation still slated for the former catering hall, only some of the outside structures and retaining walls came down Monday.
