Town Offers Free Pet Protection Agreements

Offer is for first 100 people who adopt a pet at the Animal Shelter in April.

Brookhaven has announced that the first 100 people to adopt a pet from the Brookhaven Animal Shelter in the month of April will receive a free Pet Protection Agreement donated by the Guardians of Rescue, Legal Zoom, and Rachel Hirschfeld, an author, estate attorney, and animal advocate. A Pet Protection Agreement is a trust document that allows a pet to be cared for by someone listed by the owner should they become unable to do it due to death or other circumstances.

“I would like to thank Ms. Hirshfeld and the Guardians of Rescue for their generous contribution,” said Supervisor Mark Lesko, in a statement. “The Pet Protection Agreement is a great way for any pet owner to ensure that their pets remain in loving homes.”

A Pet Protection Agreement is legally sound and valid in all fifty states. As part of the agreement, pet owners can elaborate on care instructions for their pets. It can easily be completed in 15-20 minutes without the help of an attorney. A basic Pet Protection Agreement has a value of $39.
