Rachel Chester, 39, Holtsville: “I think the Republicans are a little closed-minded, [but] I think both [the Republicans and Democrats are to blame], actually.”

Kunal Parikh, 18, Holtsville, on if the situation impacts his life: “If we couldn’t raise the debt ceiling, the dollar would plummet and the already-tough job outlook for students would be even worse.”

Joan Palladino, 49, Holtsville, on if the situation impacts his life: “Yes, most definitely. It will be my lifetime, my children’s and my grandchildren’s. It’s not going to go away.”

Anthony Palladino, 49, Holtsville, on who is to blame: “I blame it on the decisions of those who were in power in the late ‘70s through mid-‘90s, regardless of who was in power…The illegal immigrants are also getting benefits people who live here aren’t getting…Is there any party responsible? No. [It’s] a Band-Aid that’s going to come back to bite us.”

James Hamilton, 21, Holtsville, on if he thinks Washington, D.C. is dysfunctional: “Since day one, yes. I feel like this is a way to get their [politicians’] name[s] back in the papers. A lot of politicians have been speaking out to get their names [on television] for five minutes.”
