Swimming Advisory For Ronkonkoma Beach

Suffolk Health Department warns of possible elevated bacteria levels in water.

The Suffolk County Health Department has issued an advisory against swimming at Ronkonkoma Beach in Lake Ronkonkoma, warning that the recent heavy rainfall might have led to an increase in bacteria colonies.

The beach was one of 52 beaches across Suffolk County that received the advisory, which will expire at the end of day today if tested water samples prove to be safe. Temperatures are expected to reach into the 70's today, according to ABC Local.

Last week, county officials the beach after the waters tested for elevated levels of E-coli colonies multiple days in a row.

The health department said in a statement that the heavy rainfall the past two days can impact beaches that experience a lot of stormwater runoff and whose waters are enclosed, limiting the amount of tidal flush.
