Sal Nicosia Recognized By Legis. Muratore

Sachem supporter and resident honored for his work in schools, community.

Suffolk County Legis. Tom Muratore, R-Ronkonkoma, recently recognized Sal Nicosia for his efforts to empower students and help them become better equipped to participate in the political process.

Nicosia is a retired educator, author and community advocate who has devised a plan for students to participate more in the political process so they can become effective leaders in the future.

He believes the public school system needs to be proactive in educating students about public policy and issues facing our nation today. Nicosia has come up with a plan that could be incorporated into the K-12 Social Studies school curriculum at no cost to the districts.

The goal is to teach students to become more equipped to interview community leaders invited to speak within the classroom setting, and thus, help students make wise decisions and discerning choices in the electoral process.

“Our nation seriously needs to address a problem that, if not resolved, has dire consequences for our nation’s future," Nicosia said. "We should be empowering our children to be politically astute so they can ask viable questions to political candidates and to participate not spectate at civic meetings."

“It is important that our children get involved in their community beginning at an early age,” Muratore said. “I am glad to take any opportunity to speak to kids and explain the responsibilities of a Suffolk County Legislator.  Hopefully this will help them understand the political process so when they become 18 and are eligible to vote, they have had firsthand experience."
