Brookhave Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Safety Town Bicycle Rodeo at the Holtsville Ecology Center on April 28 to brush up on her traffic safety skills with some friends.

Kepert, along with Congressman Tim Bishop, secured grant funding to create Safety Town in the Town of Brookhaven in 2003. Safety Town is a miniature replica of a village where school children are instructed in pedestrian and bicycle safety.

According to a 10-year analysis of bicycle accidents in Nassau County, a Safety Town-graduate was more than 10 times less likely to be involved in a bike accident than a child who did not receive any training at Safety Town.

“As a mom and a soon to be grandmother, I am passionate about ensuring that our youngest residents learn to be safe on our streets," Kepert said. "Because we know that Safety Town is effective in keeping our kids safe, it’s important that we reach out to as many families as possible and have all Brookhaven youth instructed at Safety Town."
