Report: County Plans To Raze Bavarian Inn By Labor Day

Leg. Kennedy reportedly withdraws bid to transfer land to parks department while leaders focus on leveling dilapidated building.

Suffolk County leaders have announced a plan to tear down the dilapidated building that once housed the Bavarian Inn, by Labor Day, according to reports.

In a story from Newsday, Suffolk Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr. withdrew a resolution sitting with the legislature to transfer the property over to Suffolk County Parks for parkland restoration.

Instead, the county has agreed to tear down the structure and consider it not only for a park, but to possibly auction for private development.

"One thing that everyone can agree on is that it is an eyesore that needs to come down," Deputy County Executive John Schneider told Newday. "Let's take care of that, and then we can work with the community to figure out what should be done."

Local civic organizations, led by the Nesconset-Sachem Civic Association (NSCA), have been lobbying the county to have the Bavarian Inn site torn down for some time, describing it as an eyesore and an attraction for drug users, graffiti artists and loiterers.

At a meeting last month, Leg. Kennedy told a packed audience at the Nesconset Public Library that the site was almost impossible for use other than park land because of its shallow water table. He stated that any private entity that wished to operate a business there would need to use a septic pump to push waste uphill and tie into a cesspool system nearby. Then there would always be the danger of flooding in severe weather.
