Minimum Fines for Littering Introduced in Brookhaven

Panico: Fines levied from minimum of $250 to $2,000.

An amendment was recently introduced and passed in Brookhaven Town Code that provides for minimum fines for those who throw litter onto our roadways.

“It is time to get tough with those who have a flagrant disregard for their neighbors,” Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico said in a statement. “No one likes to see litter strewn about in our neighborhoods, and especially on the entrance and exit ramps into our communities."

According to Panico, as a result of this new law, people who litter will no longer get off with a slap on the wrist or warning.  Fines will be levied from a minimum of $250 through $2,000.

In recent years, Brookhaven has triggered many initiatives to help keep its community clean, including the Annual Keep Brookhaven Beautiful Clean Up, which will once again take place this April, and the establishment of  anti-graffiti and anti-litter task forces.

“I am grateful for the work of our waste department employees who are proactive in their stance to safeguard our community from rubbish and littering,” Panico said.
