Long-Time Sachem Resident Wins 'Woman of Distinction' Award

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore awards Helen Hethy Mulvihill for her work with Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society and other local landmarks.

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore has presented long-time Sachem resident and former Sachem School teacher Helen Hethy Mulvihill with the 2013 Woman of Distinction award. 

The legislator invited Mulvihill to his district office, along with family and friends, to present the proclamation to her. A release from the Legislature's office said of Mulvihill's accomplishments:

For nearly thirty years, Ms. Mulvihill has been found each Saturday at the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society. Museum visitors benefit from the wealth of information she provides about the town’s rich history.

Mulvihill is the daughter of a respected real estate agent, lives on a local farm owned by her family for over 150 years and was once a teacher in the Sachem School District, according to the release. 

In addition, Mulvihill serves as the president of the Lake Ronkonkoma Cemetery, the director of the Suffolk County Historical Society and volunteers for Brookhaven's Town Historian Barbara Russell.

“Her knowledge of the area and ability to communicate is apparent to all who meet her, and will help preserve the history of Lake Ronkonkoma for generations to come," Legislator Muratore stated in the release. "She has touched the lives of many, and for this reason, I take great pleasure in presenting this proclamation.” stated Muratore.
