Islip Voters Return Incumbents to Town Council Seats

Islip Republicans will maintain full control of the town board as incumbents Trish Bergin Weichbrodt and Steve Flotteron were easily re-elected by voters Tuesday.

As of 10:30 p.m., with over 75 percent of districts reported, Bergin Weichbrodt had garnered 17,053 votes and Flotteron received 17,361 votes. Democratic challengers Astrid Fidelia had 11,707 votes while co-challenger George Hafele received 11,667 votes.

The election win gives Bergin Weichbrodt her second four-year term. Flotteron will embark on his third four-year-term.

The two incumbents have stated they are committed to reducing town spend and identify new ways to enter into public/ private partnerships to save residents money.

The council race was Fidelia’s first run for office. Hafele, who resigned from serving as Islip’s Deputy Commissioner of Parks for the council run, was unsuccessful in a 2005 election for the Suffolk County Legislature.
