Islip STOP Day Collects 25K Pounds Of Hazardous Waste In Holbrook

Recycling program collects 8,000 pounds of E-Waste to be sold for generating revenue, Islip Town said.

Over 688 gallons of motor oil and 82 propane tanks have been collected so far as part of Islip Town’s annual Autumn STOP Day, which stands far Stop Throwing Out Pollutants.

According to a Town announcement, the day was held earlier this month and those needing to dispose of hazardous waste materials can still drop them off to the Town of Islip Multi Purpose Recycling Center at 155 Lincoln Ave. in Holbrook.

“STOP Days benefit all of our residents by removing pollutants from our neighborhoods and generating revenue for the Town,” Town councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt said in a release.

The announcement said the revenue comes from E-waste disposal, from which 8,000 pounds has been collected to be later sold to companies who harvest the metals from this type of waste material. In total, 25,200 pounds of hazardous material has been collected so far.

Those who would like to drop off waste to the facility can on weekdays between 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The STOP Day program is held by Islip Town twice annually.
