Graf Turns Up Heat On Common Core

After introducing bill earlier this summer, Assemblyman debates Common Core in Albany.

New York State Assemblyman Al Graf debated the virtues of the state's adoption of the Common Core Curriculum with Education Committee Chair Catherine Nolan, of Queens.

The discussion surrounded the committee's lack of in-classroom experience, particularly at the elementary level, while making policy decisions for public schools across the state.

The Common Core Curriculum is a federal initiative aimed at creating a more universal and tougher education standard across the country. The Common Core has come under heavy fire from numerous teachers, parents and education advocates for a number of reasons.

Locally, a Sachem resident has helped spearhead the movement to have New York withdraw from its participation in Common Core. Assemblyman Graf has drafted and introduced a bill that would do just that.
