For the First Time, Brookhaven to Charge For Parking at Town Beaches

A two-year resident parking permit will cost $25.

Brookhaven Town announced on its website that it will be charging a $25 fee for a two-year resident permit to park at all of its beaches starting this week.

According to town spokesperson Jack Krieger, this is the first time Brookhaven has charged a parking fee at all of its manned parking facilities. The change mainly affects beaches and marinas and does not include pocket parks without collection booths.

The parking stickers can't be purchased onsite at the beach but Kreiger said not to worry if you get there with your car packed up for a day of fun in the sun and forgot to buy your permit. A $5 daily parking permit can be purchased at any time at area beach parking lots. With your receipt, the fee can then be applied toward the purchase of the two-year parking permit.

Krieger said that the money will go into Brookhaven Town's general fund. The anticipated revenue is around $625,000 for the season.

Stickers were made available as of Monday and they will be checked at marinas when they open on May 12. Beaches will begin checking for permits on Memorial Day weekend.

The fee to access Town boat ramps is not included in this resident parking permit.

Local beaches affected by this change include and Corey Beach. Marinas include Blue Point and Sandspit.

Krieger noted Thursday that several other towns on Long Island collect fees to park at beaches. A Town of Babylon beach pass is $35 a year. In the Town of Islip, residents purchase a town recreation card for $25 for three years.
