Do Holtsville Ecology Center’s Parking Fees Bother You? Blog About It

Write about important Brookhaven Town issues in our new open blog.

Brookhaven Town recently set parking fees for the Holtsville Ecology Center starting at $5 per car/day or $10 for a yearlong pass only available to Brookhaven Town residents.

Residents responded to this in June with quite a few criticisms of this policy, and police say one woman in August decided to protest by punching the ticket booth.

What other important issues face the Sachem community that you think Brookhaven Town oversees? Talk about them in our new open blog The Soapbox-Brookhaven Gov’t.

Of course they do... We are already paying for the park in our taxes. Now we pay again. Another way for our elected officials to rob our pockets and then tell us how great they are because they didn't raise taxes... Smoke and mirrors... Shame on them.

Yes it bothered me because going to swimming lessons w/ the grandkids & not living in Brookhaven; I didn't even see the animals this summer! All I have to say is, they better have the xmas drive through this yr. with all the money they collected!

First, I resent the slant of the question. You are fishing for complaints. Second, no. My taxes do pay for the park. Residents of other towns should contribute if they want to enjoy it. The burden should not fall solely on Brookhaven residents when so many others take advantage of the wonderful benefits. Ten dollars a year gets me a sticker for all Brookhaven parks and beaches. Islip residents have special privileges at the airport and I don't begrudge them that. The Holtsville Ecology Center is well worth five dollars for non-residents.

If Brookhaven is using any state or federal money to maintain or run the parks, then MY TAX money is going towards it too.

Every town on L. I. charges non-residents fees to use their facilities. It's about time Brookhaven followed suit. The alternative was closing it.

I am not against a fee for non-residents, but to make it $10/year for residents or $250/year for non-residents is gouging non-residents and telling them YOU ARE NOT WELCOME.
