Croci Called To Active Duty

Newsday reports Islip Supervisor will be temporarily leaving post for military service.

Beginning in July, Islip Supervisor Tom Croci will most definitely be out of the office.

According to Newsday, Croci will be temporarily leaving his post for an overseas military tour that could last until spring of 2014.

The supervisor said his mandatory mobilization was confirmed within the past week, but he does not know where he will be stationed or for how long.

In his place, Croci will appoint Eric Hofmeister, Islip’s current environmental control commissioner, as deputy supervisor. The supervisor’s chair is not foreign to Hofmeister, a Sayville resident who served as supervisor in June 2006 following the resignation of then-Supervisor Peter McGowan, who was jailed for misuse of campaign funds.

"Obviously I want to be sure that going forward the town is going to continue on the course we've set, and I'm going to make sure I put the leadership in place to do that," Croci told Newsday.

Croci’s prior military career includes eight years of active duty service including a tour in Afghanistan. He went on to work in the White House situation room for President George W. Bush and also served on President Barack Obama’s presidential transition team.

On her Facebook page, Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt wrote, “I am saddened that Tom is off to a War Zone — again! I know he will make us proud. He made us proud when he became our Supervisor in Islip and we will make him proud while he is away - serving our country.”
