Brookhaven Town Issues Mandatory Evacuation of Low Lying Areas

All homes in Category 1 coastal zone required to vacate; recommended evacuation of Category 2 areas.

At noon today Acting Supervisor Kathleen Walsh signed an executive order for the mandatory evacuation of all low lying areas on both the south and north shores.

According to a release from the town, all areas within the Category 1 Surge Zone of the south shore and all areas within the Category 1 and Category 2 Surge Zone of the north shore are required to leave their homes. This includes the Strongs Neck Peninsula. Maps of the effected areas can be viewed on the town's website at www.brookhaven.org

The Town also recommended a voluntary evacuation of areas within the Category 2 zone on the south shore, areas that are prone to flooding, and any areas that experienced the impact of Tropical Storm Irene in August of last year. Officials say residents should find shelter with friends outside of the evacuation zones or move to the official Red Cross shelter at Sachem East High School on Granny Road in Farmingville.

Some key phone numbers and contact info include:

  • Red Cross: (631) 924-6911 or (1-800) 733-2767
  • Suffolk County Government: www.suffolkcountyny.gov or www.redcross.org
  • Brookhaven Town: www.brookhaven.org
  • Down Trees or Power Lines?: (631) 451-TOWN

The Town of Brookhaven will also be sending out email alerts to residents that signed up to be on the email list. You can be added to the email list by visiting the town's website at the above address. County Code Red alerts can also be accessed by signing up at Suffolk's website address above.

The taxpayers have spoken and it is not because they are being selfish. They are sending a messageRead More to the Sachem School Board, whose members have been complacent and out-of-touch for a long time. It is time they start making some TOUGH decisions that cut all the fat out of the budget. Sachem has been top-heavy with highly paid administrators for many years. Why not MERGE departments and eliminate some of these positions? Granted...Sachem is a large school district, but have you ever looked at how many directors, assistant superintendents, principals, assistant principals, administrators, assistant administrators, etc. we are paying for? Each one of these positions commands a salary of well over 100K per year...plus each one comes with a costly benefit package. Status Quo is no longer the way to go! Start negotiating better better contracts for all district services, including supplies, transportation and logistics. Major corporations do it...why shouldn't we? Taxpayers are not ATM's......ENOUGH. And, just as a side note...how much do the hundreds of "Vote Yes for the Budget" signs cost us?
