Bishop Talks Policy, Politics at Sachem East

Gives lecture to Advanced Placement high school students.

Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, spoke to a group of Advanced Placement government and politics students at Sachem High School East last week.

Among the obvious current issue topics of discussion, Bishop shared his thoughts on Occupy Wall Street.

“It’s emblematic of the sentiment of our country,” he said. “There is an enormous disparity in income in our country.”

Bishop said corporate profit is at an all-time high and payroll compensation at an all-time low.

“That’s two Americas,” he added. “That’s why we’re struggling to claw our way out of a recession.”

As for President Obama, Bishop said he has had a steep learning curve since he took office.

“He has suffered by trying too hard to achieve bipartisanship,” he said. “That has hurt his presidency.”

Bishop, Lesko announce new task force 

Last week Brookhaven Supervisor Mark Lesko and Bishop announced the Business Retention Task Force to keep businesses on Long Island.

Using the recent departure of Arrow Electronics, they spearheaded this effort to reach out to every major employer in the town over the next month. According to the town, the task force will create an ongoing dialogue so local officials know about the needs of Brookhaven businesses.
