Superintendent Nolan Attending School Safety Seminar

Suffolk County Police host partially closed meeting of school administrators in the wake of Newtown, Conn. shootings.

Suffolk Police along with County Executive Steve Bellone are hosting a school safety seminar today at the Grant Campus of Suffolk Community College in Brentwood.

The seminar is currently underway and Superintendent James Nolan informed Patch yesterday that he will be in attendance. The purpose of the seminar is to discuss school shootings, not only at the public school level, but at U.S. colleges as well.

During the seminar, police officials will be on hand to make suggestions and offer advice to school administrators seeking to improve security in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month.

Police also plan to disclose its response plan in the event of a school shooting at any of the schools in the county. The morning session was opened to media, but a closed session will follow with administrators only.

At the January 16 meeting of the Board of Education, Sachem Security Director Wayne Wilson gave a presentation of the district's current security measures and what it would like to improve going forward.
