Suffolk Police to Crack Down on School Zone Driving Violations

Operation safe school zone to take effect September 7.

Suffolk County Police Department announced Thursday that it will be cracking down on traffic violations in school zones as students throughout the county return to school this week, according to a statement from the department. 

The department said officers from  Community Oriented Police Enforcement and Highway Patrol Bureau will be stationed in school zones throughout the police district from September 7 until September 30 in an effort to enhance roadway and student safety.

They said police will be concentrating on traffic violations committed in school zones, including speeding, tailgating, passing school buses during loading and unloading and junior driver’s license violations.

“Keeping students safe as they arrive to and leave from school is a high priority,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer in a statement. “Drivers must be aware of the real risks created by dangerous driving in school zones and we will not tolerate unsafe driving in and around our schools.”

Officers, who will be patrolling in marked and unmarked cars and will also be strictly enforcing distracted driving violations, targeting those who drive while talking or texting on a cell phone.
