Statement From Superintendent James Nolan On Newtown, Conn. Shooting

Sachem Superintendent expresses his grief over the mass shooting at a Connecticut school earlier today.

Superintendent James Nolan issued the following statement regarding today's tragic mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults. The shooter is reported dead as well, but details of his death have not been confirmed.

The statement from Superintendent Nolan is as follows:

I know that I speak on behalf of the entire Sachem Family in offering our sincere condolences to the people in Connecticut. They are certainly in our thoughts and prayers. No words could possibly articulate or explain our thoughts and feelings for those poor folks. That is every parent's and community's greatest fear and no community is immune to such tragic horror.  I would ask everyone to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Newtown Patch will be updating the story as it develops.

That's it, that's all he had to say. Not how he will be taking a closer look to make our schools safer. How about the lack of security at our schools Mr. Nolan? Oh I forgot our elementary schools have none.

How about our Sequoya assistant principal whose son is a murderer and the exact situation could have happened to our kids at Sequoya. Sequoyas doors are never locked and I am sure if it was her son the person at the desk would let him in to see his mother. How many times does this country let this happen.....One time to many. I would like our kids to be protected as well as ourselves from such disaster. I have a suggestion for you Mr. Nolan stop with all the phone calls and work on getting some armed security in our schools rather than expensive football team uniforms and wasted schools we didn't need that have leaky roofs . Our children...Our Community is more important!!! if anyone agrees ....keep this going....Hope to see you all at the next BOE meeting.

Sorry to say but this is something that can and will happen again. There is really not much you can do. Anyone can have a concealed weapon on them, get buzzed in and it starts. Put an armed guard at the door to let them in and he is a target right off the bat..As always in this country we all get hyped up at the beginning and them compalcency kicks in. I do believe armed security are needed, but have them dressed in plain clothes with concealed weapons..Have them walk a certain outlined perimeter in eye shot of the doors. As stated before, this will happen again.. It has been happening all through history. We just have to make it more difficult for it to happen. Possibly with enough obstacles in place they will think twice. The security at East can't even keep the handicapped parking spaces free from parents who totally disreguard the law and park or stand there waiting for their kids. And you want them to stop a gunman who is on a mission to kill.. Good Luck !!!
