Small Plane Lands on Sunrise Highway Median

Single-engine plane lands on median after experiencing engine trouble Thursday afternoon, police say.

The pilot of a small plane safely landed it on the median of Sunrise Highway in East Moriches Thursday afternoon. 

The plane took off from Lufker/Spadaro Airport in East Moriches at about 1:30 p.m., but a minute later, the single-engine ultralight Challenger experienced engine trouble, police said.

The pilot, Frank Fierro, attempted to return to the airport, but when he realized the plane would not make it back, he put the plane down on the Sunrise Highway median near Exit 61, police said.

Officers assisted airport personnel to tow the plane back to the airport, police said. 

There were no injuries and no damage to the plane.
