Sachem BOE Adopts Tax Cap Budget

The Sachem Board of Education, by a vote of 7-2, adopted the 2013-14 budget that installs the tax cap levy of 3.14 percent at Wednesday's meeting.

The proposed budget is now up to the community, which will vote on June 18.

The following is a list of some of the items the new budget includes, however this list is by no means comprehensive.

1. Kindergarten is now 1/2 Day
2. All sports are fully funded
3. All music is fully funded
4. Co-curricular clubs such as cheer, Arrowettes, and Robotics are 50% funded
5. No schools will be closed

Board members Duncan and Scavo were the two dissenters. Thursday's tentative board meeting has been canceled.

I think its time to talk about another elephant in the room, that would be teachers on the board deciding on teachers contracts. How is that allowed? Its like the workers giving themselves a raise. They dont teach in the district they help govern you say. Its called contract leapfrogging, a union tactic succesfully used by local police departments for the past forty years or so and the teachers union as well.

I'm a 6th Grader at Sagamore Middle School and all of you wanting to vote NO because of half day kindergarden, read this. I know people who are from the state of Indiana where they have half day kindergarten and they are incredibly smart. Also by including sports and music they will get into a better college with extracurriculars. This only affects one year of their lives and kindergarten isn't even necessary by state law, as least they kept it in the first place. If you complain and vote no, you will be affecting more kids. This is not just for the wallets of the administration because coming from a kid this will GREATLY affect me. So please think before you vote no. Also do not complain to me that I'm too young to get this because I am not only a straight A student but I have been to a board meeting and I know what is going on. PLEASE vote yes. I will be greatly in your debt if you do. Thank you.

None of the kids in my grade are obese. Everyone at least does one sport or they're fit. Only very few kids in our grade are obese and believe it or not sports do help. Now please do tell me where did you get the info that many kids are obese in Sachem? I go to school with them and few kids are obese, I can also definitely tell you that without sports kids will definitely get more obese. But most kids are fit in our school, still kids may not be as fit as they were back then but they are healthy. Many kids also still ride their bikes everywhere Stephen.

Val, maybe some but far from many. I do live, drive and bike around Holbrook area and do not see many. If kids have to go anywhere most are driven.
