Ronkonkoma Fire Chief Issues Storm Reminders

Volunteers say stock up early, stay off the roads if possible and report downed power lines.

The Chief of the Ronkonkoma Fire Department has issued the following statement in light of the Blizzard Watch in effect for Suffolk County. The storm is slated to slam Long Island on Friday.

From the Chief's Office:

The chief's and members of the Ronkonkoma Fire Department would like to remind everyone to please prepare early for this storm and if you do not need to be on the roads please stay home.  Keep the roads clear for snow plows and responding emergency apparatus so that we can respond to peoples' calls for help quickly.

As with all major storms the Ronkonkoma Fire Department will have volunteer FIRE and EMS members standing by in quarters to reduce our response times to your emergencies during this storm.

Due to high winds and blizzard-like conditions there is a good chance that power outages, falling trees, falling branches, and down power lines may occur.  If you have an emergency at your home please try to have someone in front of your home to flag down responding crews. These conditions will make locating specific addresses difficult. If you call to report a sparking or arcing power line on the ground our department will respond to investigate life threats. Due to the overwhelming number of these calls received during these storms our dispatchers will be constantly in contact with LIPA teams to coordinate their responses to these incident locations.

If you discover a down power line report the line and if there is any fire present. ALWAYS ASSUME A POWER LINE IS ENERGIZED AND KEEP EVERYONE AWAY FROM IT.

Thank you to all of our residents in our community for your ongoing support and thank you to all of our members in the Ronkonkoma Fire Department and our neighbor fire departments and ambulance corps that will be taking time away from their families during this storm to standby to help their neighbors.
