Reports: Ronkonkoma Veteran Shot In Texas

Ryan Dickinson died on the Fort Hood Army base, media reports and military announcements said.

A retired Army sergeant from Ronkonkoma who served in Iraq for 15 months was shot to death at the Fort Hood Army base in Fort Hood, Texas, according to an announcement from the base, Newsday as well as KWTX, a CBS affiliate in Texas.

According to reports in Newsday, Ryan Dickinson, 26, was shot early Sunday during a late-night gathering at a home on the base. A press release posted to the base’s press center Tuesday confirms Dickinson’s death, and that Sgt. Brett Wessel, 26, was arrested Sunday in connection with the incident. Wessel is in pretrial confinement, the release says.

The base identifies Wessel as a 1st Cavalry Division soldier, and KWTX says that he is being held in the Bell County Jail.

Newsday says that Dickinson is a Ronkonkoma resident who graduated Connetquot High School in 2005, and is married with children.

Fort Hood’s release says that the incident is under investigation by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. No specific charges had been filed at the time of the announcement.
