A 24-year-old Coram man was struck and killed by a minivan Tuesday night after his car ran out of gas and he attempted to cross the Long Island Expressway on foot, police said.
Ryan Marshall was driving a 2005 Honda CRV eastbound on the LIE when his vehicle ran out of gas between exits 62 and 63 in Holtsville, police said.
Marshall was attempting to cross the eastbound lanes when he was struck by a Suffolk County Department of Social Services (DSS) 2006 Ford minivan that was traveling east in the HOV lane around 7:50 p.m., police said.
"It appears that Marshall may have been trying to cross the expressway to get to a Suffolk County Highway Patrol officer that was stopped on the expressway’s center median," police said.
Marshall was pronounced dead the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 55-year-old female from Riverhead who works for DSS, was not injured and remained at the scene. Police did not release her name.
The Ford was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing, police said.
