Pedestrian Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash in Patchogue

A 24-year-old Patchogue man is fighting for his life after being struck by a car in Patchogue early Sunday morning.

According to police, Walter Orlando Matute Penaranda was crossing Montauk Highway east of Bay Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene around 4:20 a.m.

Penaranda was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in critical condition.

The vehicle that hit Penaranda is described as a gray or silver two-door sedan with a rear spoiler, possibly an older model Honda.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed or has information on the crash to call the Vehicular Crime Unit at 631-852-6555 or anonymously Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Montauk Highway in the area of the crash was closed until about 10 a.m. Sunday as police investigated.

Not that I think what happened is right The person should have stopped. But I know first hand that people just walk out all over Patchogue roads in the dark and you can not see them at all. I have almost hit 2 people myself, not all roads have lights and for someone to think we can see them in dark wearing dark clothes is crazy. If people MUST walk into the road late at night PLEASE dress according or stop walking in the road when You see a car. You see us we CAN NOT see you. Please be safe. Prayers to this mans family.....
