Lake Grove Woman High in Fatal Crash

Kills woman from same town on Route 25A.

A Lake Grove woman was arrested for DWAI after she struck and killed a bicyclist from Lake Grove in Miller Place Sunday evening.

Nicole Shellard, 32, of 162 Symphony Dr., was driving a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe eastbound on 25A near Hunter Avenue when she struck bicyclist Kathryn Underdown at 6 p.m.  Underdown, 45, of 85 Washburn St., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said she did not stop immediately after the crash, only after she hit into another vehicle. They also said she was high on three prescription medications.

Shellard was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and was arraigned Monday afternoon at First District Court in Central Islip.

A call to Underdown's home went unanswered Monday.
