Holtsville, Ronkonkoma Men Arrested for BWI

Police say both intoxicated men switched places at the helm.

Suffolk County Police have arrested two local men for allegedly operating a boat under the influence of alcohol in the Great South Bay.

According to the report, Michael Shear, 29, of Holtsville, and Olimpio Rego, 26, of Ronkonkoma were arrested just east of Bouy 17 in the East Channel of the bay near Ocean Beach. Officers Kevin Comiskey and Frank Sierra of the Marine Bureau were out on BWI patrol when they went to assist another Marine Bureau unit on a vessel inspection.

The officers noticed that Shear appeared to be intoxicated and placed him under arrest. It was then that the passengers told the officers that Shear had switched places at the helm with Rego when they saw the marine police. Rego was placed under arrest for BWI as well.

Both men were transported to the 3rd Precinct for processing. The vessel was impounded.
