Holtsville IRS Building Evacuated

Suspicious substance turns out to be baking soda.

The IRS building in Holtsville was evacuated Tuesday when a worker found a suspicious powder in a package.

The substance was later determined to be baking soda, according to a spokeswoman from the IRS. The incident occurred at approximately 10 a.m.

About 60 federal employees, including three managers, who were exposed to the substance, were evacuated and waited outside the facility on Corporate Court for about an hour while Suffolk County's hazardous response team examined the package.

"They tested the substance and determined it was not hazardous," the spokeswoman said. "At that time, they went back to normal business hours."

The same spokeswoman did not say if the package was a regular item received in the mail.
