Farmingville FD Gets World Trade Center Steel

Will create future monument at fire house to honor 9/11 victims.

Last week the Farmingville Fire Department received a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, which they will proudly display in a future monument at the department’s headquarters on Portion Road.

The steel is four feet long and 35 pounds, according to Farmingville Fire Commissioner and Ex-Chief Bob Wallace.

“We have something we can put inside or out,” he said. “It’s always going to be a remembrance. There will be a place for people in town to come and have a little peace. It’s something for us to always remember, so the future generations will never forget.”

Nine volunteers from Farmingville went to JFK International Airport to pick up the steel in full dress uniform. They took an engine and placed the steel atop for the ride back.

Members of the Farmingville Fire Department did stand by at an FDNY station in Manhattan in the wake of the terrorist attacks 10 years ago. They were there for a couple of days, lending support. The department also hosted five funerals for victims from the community who died.
