Explosion Rocks Holtsville Office Building

Elevator technician suffers burns while repairing facility.

A man was airlifted in Holtsville Wednesday afternoon after being burned on 27 percent of his body during an explosion.

An unidentified elevator technician was injured while working on an elevator on the first floor in the rear of the building at 755 Waverly Avenue located in Waverly Plaza, directly across from Sequoya Middle School.

Witnesses say the man had black burn marks on his face and arm.

"An electrical panel blew up in his face," said Richard Stack, a Second Assistant Chief of the Holbrook Fire Department. "He was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center."

Both the exterior and interior - from where the police let people walk up to - showed no signs of damage from fire.

One worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said the elevators have been tripping out for over two weeks thanks to a flood in the second floor men's bathroom.

"There were problems with the elevator as late as Monday," said another person who works in the building, who also wished to remain anonymous.

Suffolk County Police, which directed people to get their belongings and exit the building for the remainder of the day, would not comment on the incident yet.
