Cops: Truck Hit Waverly Overpass, Snagged Traffic

Driver hit with six summonses and truck is taken out of service.

Three lanes of the westbound Long Island Expressway was closed starting at Exit 62 this afternoon after a flatbed truck hauling a storage unit struck the overpass at Waverly Avenue.

Police received a call at around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon that the truck had hit the overpass while traveling underneath with the utility storage unit strapped to the bed. Police had to close all westbound lanes except for the HOV lane for approximately two and half hours.

There were no injuries and no other vehicles were involved in the collision. A Suffolk Police Motor Carrier Unit responded to the scene and inspected the vehicle, which was apparently loaded too high to pass safely on the interstate. As a result of their investigation, police issued the driver six summonses for undetermined violations and the vehicle was placed out of service, which means it can not be operated on the roadways in its current condition.
