80-Year-Old Hit By Mack Truck, Killed

An 80-year-old Bluepoint woman was killed in a car accident in Holbrook Monday afternoon.

Anita McCauley was driving a 1999 Saturn westbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when she attempted to make a left turn at the intersection of Broadway Avenue.

She was struck by a 1987 Mack tractor trailer driven by David Murphy at 1:12 p.m., according to Suffolk County Police.

Murphy's vehicle was traveling eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway and towing a 1986 Fruehauf Trailer when the crash occurred, police said.

McCauley, of Oyster Cove Lane, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead.

Murphy, 46, of Dayton Ave., Manorville, was also transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.

The tractor-trailer was examined at the scene by the Suffolk County Police Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety Unit. Murphy was issued numerous summonses for vehicle infractions and charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
