Doctor Meryl Ain recaps a number of hot-button issues affecting schools as we inch closer to the new school year. For one, a recent study that showed a trend in students living in households where the parents are unmarried. Ain wonders if the greater frequency of break-up between unmarried parents as opposed to married parents will negatively affect students. Ain also discusses the issue of bullying, after a New Hampshire school district hired a "Bully Specialist" to deal with the school's issues. The specialist will receive a full teacher's salary. Ain wonders if such measures are necessary.
Ben Vitale relates a personal experience meeting a man while vacationing with his wife on a beach in eastern Long Island. Vitale tells the story of the man, Paul, who came to this country with limited English and overcame many obstacles to become a financial success. In one highlight Vitale recounts how Paul had been denied the opportunity to buy a home because the real estate agent did not want to sell the house to a foreigner. Paul opened up his own real estate business and put that agent out of business. The blog illustrates how determination and some gumption can overcome discrimination and other obstacles.
