Ronkonkoma Family Crowdfunding To Get Grandmother Her Mobility

Woman needs a specialized wheelchair to move after a 1992 car accident caused by a drunk driver, campaign says.

A St. James woman needs a new wheelchair, and her Ronkonkoma family has put together a GiveForward crowdfunding campaign to raise the money to get her to mobility.

According to the campaign created by Brian and Jenny Calamia, Jan Kelly was in a car accident in 1992 that was caused by a drunk driver. The accident has placed her in a wheelchair for the past 20 years, which is in need of replacing.

"Insurance does not cover this, since she lives in a nursing home and can use their provided chairs," the campaign site said. "Unfortunately, she cannot use their chair, because she needs specialized equipment for her arms, seat base and seat back (for pressure)."

As of this writing the campaign has raised $775 out of a $35,000 goal, with 119 days left of fundraising.
