Attention Seniors! Social Security & Medicare: Monday, June 6, 7:00pm: John Sciacchitano of the RSVP Speakers Bureau (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) will present this overview and guide to Social Security and Medicare for persons who are at or near the age of eligibility. Obtain accurate information untainted by commercial interests. Learn how and when to apply for benefits. Understand the options that will help you make informed decisions.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve: Wednesday, June 8, 7:00pm: Learn about the wonders of Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale, which maintains 3,473 acres of land and water for the protection of game birds, fish, and animals, as well as 50 miles of hiking, horseback riding, cross-country ski, and nature trails. Environmental educators will present a talk on the history of the preserve, and discuss the range of programs offered to the public. Hear about fly-fishing in the preserve, and enjoy a slideshow featuring its wildlife inhabitants.

Voices of September 11: Thursday, June 9, 10:00am-6:00pm: Representatives from the non-profit group Voices of September 11th will return to Sachem Library to assist family members in assembling digital memorials of their lost loved ones for the 9/11 Living Memorial Project. 

Weight Loss: Monday, June 13, 7:00pm: Learn to lose weight and keep it off. Certified nutritionist Anne Marie Lisa will teach you how to stop the constant yo-yo dieting and weight gain.

In the Shadow of the Mountain: Friday, June 17, 7:00pm, Relive the creation of Mt. Rushmore. Actor/storyteller Lou Del Bianco portrays his grandfather, Luigi Del Bianco, an Italian immigrant who was one of the artists who carved our nation's greatest monument. This is a return engagement for Mr. Del Bianco, who portrayed Abe Lincoln in From Railsplitter to President. 

Great Decisions Discussion Series … Topic: The Caucasus: Monday, June 20, 7:00pm: The countries and regions of the Caucasus all have strong national identities but have long lived in the shadow of their larger neighbors: Russia, Iran, and Turkey. How does this influence the Caucasus of today? How do the region's energy resources play into its relations with the outside world?  Sachem resident and long-time Great Decisions participant Peter Hanson will lead this monthly discussion series of current global hot topics. Pick up your copy of the readings at the Welcome Desk. Great Decisions, a national, civic-education program on U.S. foreign policy and international issues, is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association.

Nine Ways to De-Stress Using Feng Shui: Tuesday June 21, 7:00pm: Learn how to use the principles of Feng Shui to assess your current levels of stress at home and work. Discover some simple techniques to help you reduce your stress and move you into a calmer, happier, more productive mindset.

Empire State College Information Session: Wednesday, June 22, 7:00pm: SUNY Empire State College, uniquely designed to serve adults pursuing associate, bachelor's and master's degrees, offers affordable degrees onsite as well as online. A representative will be on hand to provide details and answer questions on topics including degree programs, study options, costs and aid, and transfer credit. 

Poetry: Verse in Person: Tuesday, June 28, 7:00pm: Each month a guest poet presents a reading, after which the audience is encouraged to share original works at an open mic. This month's guest reader is Barbara Southard. Though she started out as a painter and printmaker, Ms. Southard has been combining word and image for many years. A number of her poems have been published in journals and anthologies, and she is the author of a collection of poems Remember. She currently lives and writes in Miller Place, New York. Special thanks to Jeanette Klimszewski and Mankh, members of the Performance Poets Association, for co-hosting this series. 

Staying Independent for Life: Thursday, June 30, 10:00am: Staying independent requires a healthy body and a safe home. A representative from RSVP will share tips on staying fit and preventing falls. Get the information you need to continue to live confidently on your own. 

June Films at Sachem Public Library

Reel Rebels: Black Swan: Tuesday, June 7, 6:00 p.m.: Intriguing, informative, sometimes controversial, but always thought provoking, this monthly series combines the best in film and discussion. This month's selection is a dark and intense psychological thriller. Seamlessly combining elements of horror and high art, Black Swan showcases Natalie Portman's unforgettable performance as a prima ballerina struggling with her dark side as she takes on the lead role in Swan Lake.

Foreign Film: Zelary: Saturday, June 11, 2:00pm: A nurse and her surgeon-lover join the resistance movement in 1940s Czechoslovakia. When they are discovered, the lover flees and the nurse is forced to hide in a remote mountain village where a former patient pretends to be her husband.

Opera & Art Film Series: Paris the Luminous Years: Wednesday, June 8, 1:30pm and 6:30pm: This new documentary showcases the storm of Modernism which swept the art world from 1905 to 1930. Paris the Luminous Years explores the period in which an international group including Marc Chagall, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, Aaron Copland, Marcel Duchamp, Sylvia Beach, and Janet Flanner revolutionized the modern world.

  • The Next Three Days: June 16, 1:30 and 6:30pm: A married couple's life is turned upside down when the wife is accused of murder.
  • The King's Speech: June 23, 1:30 and 6:30pm: King George VI overcomes his nervous stammer with the assistance of speech therapist Lionel Logue.
  • How Do You Know: June 30, 1:30 and 6:30pm: After being cut from the USA softball team, Lisa finds herself in the middle of a love triangle.
