Vote Yes Campaign Holds Strategy Meeting

A group of roughly 30 Sachem residents including Board of Education Trustee Christine Lampitelli met in the board room annex at Samoset Middle School last night to discuss the group's strategy to get the proposed budget passed.

The group distributed stacks of a flier that reads in bold "Vote Yes for the children, Vote Yes for the property values, Vote Yes for the Sachem community."

Among the issues discussed was the group's sensitivity to the fact that they are advocating for a specific outcome and as such are restricted from spreading the message at certain venues and locations.

In the coming days leading up to the vote the group intends to canvas all the area supermarkets, and to make inroads at senior citizen communities.

On Tuesday morning, the day of the vote, the group plans on visiting area bagel shops, delis, 7-Elevens and gyms to remind those heading off to work.

Areas that serve Hiawatha and Nokimis elementary schools will gain a bit more attention since they were the only two elementary schools that had more No than Yes votes in the original May 21 budget vote. It should be noted that those two communities were not solely responsible for the original budget's failure, however.

The organization also continued to promote its "10 person" strategy, whereby 10 people are encouraged to vote. Those 10 in turn encourage an additional 10, who in turn tell another 10 and so forth.

"This is the only group that's gonna get it out there," said Laura Slattery, one of the group's organizers. "We have 55,000 registered people in the community; we have 30 people in this room," she added.

Slattery also mentioned a rally being held on Monday behind the old Sachem administrative building on Union Avenue in Holbrook. That rally is headed up by the organizers of the Save Kindergarten rally held at the same location last week.
