Tyler Andreassi Wins Black Helmet Award

Linebacker and power running back also scoops up Team MVP and Defensive MVP at Sachem's annual dinner.

Tyler Andreassi doesn't play hockey, but he scored a hat trick on Sunday night when he racked up three major awards at Sachem football's 38th annual awards dinner at Villa Lombardi's.

The star running back and defensive linebacker for Sachem North took home the Black Helmet Award, a hand-crafted lamp made by legendary coach Fred Fusaro, who founded the award back in 1982. Andreassi was also named Team MVP and Defensive MVP for the 2012 season.

The Black Helmet Award is given to a player that fully represents Sachem football, in mind, body and spirit, according to The Sachem Report.

For his career, Andreassi had 165 career tackles, which ranks him sixth all-time in program history and also rushed for 1,169 yards, making him No. 18 all-time in Sachem history.

Andreassi is only the fourth player in Sachem history to win the tri-fecta of Black Helmet, Team MVP and Defensive MVP: James Leach (1989), Jesse Brush (1998) and current Sachem assistant coach Thomas Pandolf (2003).

Trent Crossan and Malik Pierre shared the Offensive MVP Award.

Other award winners at the dinner were:

  • Defensive Lineman of the Year: Steven Mills
  • Offensive Lineman of the Year: Steven Mills and Conor Harris
  • Defensive Back of the Year: Kevin Bragaglia
  • Special Teams Player of the Year: Bryan Morris
  • Patrick Harkins Hustle Award: Kevin Lathan
  • Scout Team Player of the Year: Rich Fish
  • Most Improved Player of the Year: Tyler Witt
  • Coaches Awards: Nick DeRossi, Anthony DeMetteo, Mike O’Donnell, Justin Rivera and Michael Slattery
