Truck Driver Cited For Waverly Overpass Collision

Driver allegedly pulled over, then fled the scene.

Suffolk County Police issued six tickets to a car carrier driver who allegedly smashed into the Waverly Avenue overpass on the Long Island Expressway and fled the scene after debris from the collision struck another vehicle.

Police say Robert Yee was driving a 2005 International car carrier westbound on the LIE when a SUV that was strapped to the top of the carrier struck the overpass in Holtsville at around 10:30 this morning.

Debris from the SUV rained down and struck a 1997 GMC driven by C.J. McGuire, who was traveling behind the carrier. Both vehicles reportedly pulled over to the side of the road, but according to police, that's when Yee sped off. McGuire followed Yee while on the phone with police. Officer David Woodworth pulled Yee over on Express Drive North at Exit 61.

Yee, 33, of Mamaroneck was issued citations for leaving the scene of an accident, operating an over-height vehicle and four equipment violations. The truck was also placed out of service and must be towed by the Yonkers-based company that owns the truck.

Meanwhile two vehicles that swerved to avoid the debris were also involved in a crash. Police say no one was injured in that collision. Yee will appear at First District Court at a later date.
