SCWA Installs Solar Panels at Tech Building

Part of series of efforts to go green.

The Suffolk County Water Authority is maintaining its efforts to go green with the installation of solar panels on the roof of its Technical Services Building.

"With the installation of these solar panels, the Suffolk County Water Authority is continuing its efforts of being environmentally-conscious when providing its customers with the cleanest water at the lowest cost," said Chairman Michael LoGrande in a statement. "It is imperative that we all take individual initiatives in conserving energy especially since we are one of LIPA's biggest customers."

Nearly 3,000 pounds of CO2 have been avoided and 1,500 kWh of energy has been saved because of the placement of these solar panels that were installed in late 2009, according to a statement. They are mounted at a 10-degree angle, facing due south. Sensors to monitor solar irradiance, solar panel temperature, ambient temperature and wind speed have also been installed to get the most effective use of these solar panels.

"The solar panel installation is part of a series of efforts by the Authority to go green," continued Special Projects Coordinator Jeffrey Szabo in a statement. "We will effectively utilize solar energy and consider energy-efficient alternatives in our day-to-day actions."
