Sachem East Softball Wins Opening Playoff Round

Flaming Arrows will face Commack after 4-3 win over West Islip.

It was Cassie Asselta’s RBI-single in the seventh inning that helped Sachem East earn a 4-3 victory over West Islip in the first round of the Suffolk County Class AA softball playoffs on Monday afternoon.

No. 10 East (15-6) will advance to play No. 2-seeded Commack on Wednesday at 4 p.m. 

Marissa Wilson hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give East an early lead. She went 3-for-4. Katie Tibbets, who went 2-for-4, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Marissa Smith, who received the win for East on the mound, pitched seven innings and struck out 11 Lions hitters.

Meanwhile, the Sachem North softball team was eliminated from the playoffs after an 8-2 loss to Hauppauge.
