Sachem Alums Evacuated at Salisbury University

Hurricane Irene affecting entire east coast, heads for Long Island.

Sachem East alums Kristin Butzke and Brianna Phillips started their college careers less than a week ago and they’re already being told to get off campus.

It wasn’t their choice though, Hurricane Irene is wreaking havoc on the east coast and Salisbury University in Maryland, where the girls are freshmen, evacuated its campus.

Butzke said she’ll be with the soccer team, which they both play for, at an off-campus house.

“It’s just funny because we had a little earthquake a couple of days ago and now we have a hurricane,” Butzke said. “It's crazy, everyone has to be out if Ocean City by 5 p.m. [Friday] and our school’s closed all weekend. We can't even start school on Monday like planned.”

“Everyone was shocked,” said Phillips, who drove home for a four-day weekend. “We cannot re-enter the campus until Monday at some time.”
