Reminder: Budget Rally Planned For Today

Sachem residents who are supporting the Board of Education's proposed 2013-14 budget have planned a rally to show their support today in the cul de sac behind the old Sachem administrative building on Union Avenue in Holbrook.

The rally will begin at 4 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. A Facebook invitation for the event indicates that nearly 50 people plan to attend.

Organizers for the rally were also behind the Rally for Kindergarten, which was held in response to the board's decision to reduce full-day kindergarten to half-day. Full-day has since been restored to the spending plan provided the budget passes on Friday, according to Sachem officials.

The tax cap budget is a 3.14% tax levy increase, or $205 per year for the average Brookhaven household. For Islip residents a passed budget would mean an increase in taxes of $164 on the year, and an increase of $237 for Smithtown households.

The total proposed budget number for the 2013-14 school year is 286,936,993, a 1.5% decrease in spending over this year's budget.
