About: Sachem High School radio is the biggest educational radio station in the Northeast. Reaching 6,000 watts with its tower, the student operated station is run by radio professional Mark Laura, a Sachem graduate from the 1980s.

Formerly a full jazz station for many years, WSHR is now host to Top 40, classic rock and pop music. On Sundays, the station plays jazz music for the listeners deprived of their tunes from the past.

During the school year, students host radio shows after class, starting at 3pm. Both Sachem High School North and East have broadcast journalism classes, which the radio station uses to stock its shows. The students also broadcast football and basketball games at North and East.

Founded in the 1960s, WSHR has been a major part of the community in Sachem and Lake Ronkonkoma. It serves as an information source for school closings, calling graduation names, and everything in between.
