Man Injured in Freak Accident On LIE

A bizarre accident on the off ramp at Exit 61 of the Long Island Expressway sent a man to the hospital yesterday.

Police say around 1:25 p.m. yesterday afternoon an unidentified man was driving his Jeep westbound on LIE and pulled over to the shoulder on Express Drive North for an unknown reason. The driver got out of his vehicle and was standing near it when a tractor trailer heading in the same direction lost two back tires as it passed.

As the truck sped by the loose tire began to roll toward the man’s parked Jeep. That’s when police say the man attempted to stop the tire from striking his vehicle by jumping in front of it. The tire struck the motorist, injuring him.

The man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. His condition was unknown, but police said his injuries were non-life-threatening.
