Local Students Win Piano Competition

Two students from the Sachem School District recently grabbed first place in their respective categories at the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation's annual competition.

Oliver Liu, a 7th-grader at Samoset Middle School and Eugene Iovine III, a junior at Sachem East took first place honors in the Long Island-wide competition after performing for the judges at Faust Harrison Pianos in Huntington Station back in March.

Liu shared first place in the Early Advanced division, playing Chopin's "Nocturne" in F minor. Iovine III secured his first place win in the Advanced division with a recitation of Chopin's "Fantasie-Impromptu."

Iovine is no stranger to the contest. Last year he tied for first place in the same division he won outright last year. He also took first place in the Early Advanced division back in 2010.

With the placements, both Liu and Iovine will get to perform their winning pieces in a ceremony at the Staller Center at Stony Brook University on June 6.
