Kids, Families have Rolls of Fun with Eggs

Holbrook Chamber hosts annual Easter event.

It was a warm, sunny day at the races at Seneca Middle School in Holbrook on Saturday, where the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce's annual Easter Egg Roll took place.

An Easter Egg Roll, for those who are not familiar, is an event where children use popsicle sticks to push an Easter Egg as they race to the finish line. Traditionally, a real egg is used, but at today's event the lucky participants were each given a plastic egg to race with. It was filled with candy, a toy and a sticker.

The history of an Easter Egg Roll dates back for years and it is thought to have been started in England or Germany.  Easter Egg Rolls are held annually all over Long Island and the country but perhaps the most famous is held every year at the White House on the great lawn on Easter Monday.

On Saturday dozens of families turned out for the event and a chance to have a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny himself, who was the No. 1 cheerleader for the kids at the event. Parents, grandparents and siblings gathered around to cheer on their child as they raced to the finish.

The participants were divided up by four age groups (3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-10 year olds). There were multiple races in every age group, upon which the winners from every race (within each age group) would have a final match-up to determine each age group's winner. Each of the winners from each age group were then awarded a trophy afterwards.

"The egg roll is a great time for the whole family and that they had been coming every year for a few years now," said Carleen from Holtsville, who attended the event with her two sons, one of which competed in the 5-6 year old race.

Her son Carlo's favorite part of the event?

"The moon bounce," he answered with a smile.

Sure enough, dozens of children were waiting patiently for their chance to have a turn on the moon bounce while they waited for their turn to race.

It was an exciting event for all of those who participated and with Easter only a day away, the annual Easter Egg Roll truly got everyone involved in the spirit of the holiday.
