Jan. 27: Movies, Support Group, Defensive Driving

Here's what's happening Thursday in the Sachem community.

Check this list everyday for a glimpse at what's happening around the Sachem community ... from school events to sports games and Town of Brookhaven and Islip functions, there is a sampling of everything.

There will be a group gathering for parents dealing with heroin abuse by their children at Holbrook's Crossroads Counseling Center from 7-8:30 p.m. 

2. At 1:30 p.m., the Sachem Public Library will be showing the movie "The Young Victoria". A portrayal of the turbulent first years of Queen Victoria's rule, and her enduring romance with Prince Albert. Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend and Miranda Richardson star.

3. Defensive driving: The Town of Brookhaven along with National Safety Council will be hosting classes at its local recreation centers and Town Hall. Classes are held in two 3-hour sessions. Participants must attend both classes to receive their certification. Class size limited please call location to sign up. They run from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

4. If you're an Islip Town resident, head down to the Joyce Fitzpatrick Center from 7-9 p.m.

5. Stories: Check the site for the latest "Inside the Numbers" column, a piece on a hockey tournament at the Nassau Coliseum featuring some local residents, and a profile on a Sachem alum working in the athletic department at Penn State.
